Welcome to the (biblical) Jungle.
Listen up, Ranger Rick. This Substack will be full of things that I, your humble Reverend Doc, consider to be basic information.
However, this basic information has been historically kept away from us. I wouldn’t say that this has necessarily been on purpose, but still… it’s been kept away.
UNTIL NOW.
I will teach you how to read your Bible. I will teach you how to understand your Bible. I will teach you the in’s and the out’s of your Bible.
I also vow to not bore you.
The Reverend Doc is an honorary Gilmore Girl. I love movies, music, dumb celeb moments and even dumber internet moments. I grew up on Carol Burnett and SNL. I listen to anything and everything, ranging from Frank Sinatra to Chance the Rapper, from Charlie Parker to Alan Jackson. I love The Office, Boy Meets World, Bewitched, Parks & Rec, Whose Line Is It Anyways, etc. Going to a bookstore with a coffee is considered my version of a “good time.”
Back to Basics with the Reverend Doc is a place where these worlds intersect.
“Why?”
Because I’m here to make the Bible fun to read again.
Every Thursday, at a time I deem appropriate, I’ll post a Substack or a Podcast episode (because I know we all learn in different ways). The BTBWTRD (Back to Basics with the Reverend Doc) Podcast is available on almost all streaming platforms, and the transcript is available here on Substack. So, you really won’t miss anything unless you really want to.
At the end of the day, we have all felt like we weren’t equipped to read the Bible. Whether it’s because we have tried and felt intimidated, or felt stupid, or felt like we were missing something, reading and understanding the Bible is a skill that we are not taught. It’s something that everyone thinks is an inherent trait.
But guess what?
That ain’t true. Just like anything else, it takes practice and a pocket full of skills to really understand.
So, buckle up:
Let’s go read with confidence. Thanks for being here.
XOXO, Gossip Girl.
